In a fit of cleaning, I threw the block in the trash, knowing I’d never use it for painting as it was terrible. A day later I took it out of the trash to try with colored pencil. I sketched one and then another flower. Because this started out as an experiment, I didn’t have a clear idea for the design. Since then I’ve been enjoying filling the page, collecting flower after flower on the paper. This experiment 1) made me re-think the purpose of my art supplies and 2) helped me realize that sketches don’t have to happen in one sitting. Maybe these were obvious realizations, but for me, they felt profound. Sitting in the garden connecting with some of my favorite flowers day after day has been such a joy. Is there a supply or material or tool that you don’t like using? What other purpose might you use it for? Do you feel pressure to “finish” projects quickly without fully enjoying the process? Do you stop yourself from starting something because you don’t have the time? Try slowing down and savoring the experience without worrying about the end result (or how long it takes).
