Last weekend I finished crocheting a shawl I’d been working on, on and off (mostly off), for around 2 years. Now I’m dreaming about what my next project should be. After realizing I didn’t sew a single garment in 2021 (despite having plenty of fabric and patterns waiting), I’m dreaming about what I’ll sew next, too. It might take me years to finish these next projects and that will be ok, too. We’re about halfway through January and it’s easy to feel like maybe we’re falling behind (already!). It can be tempting to place our dreams and goals and plans beside all the year-in-review posts people have been sharing these last few weeks and feel as if we could never measure up. Don’t. Koosje Koene recently wrote about sketching with her father. After sketching together with other artists over the years she’s realized how each artist has his or her own pace. She writes: “There is no need to compare yourself, your art, or your drawing speed to that of others.” I think it’s true for any endeavor. If your year seems to be off to a slow start (in direct opposition to the pace of the calendar), it’s ok. Enjoy the process and take it at your own pace. One thing at a time.
